About the film
Fires of Childhood is the eighth short production from Wingless Films, the second of the Wingless Shorts micro-films (after Attention in 2010), and the final video release from Eternal Silence before its transition into the Wingless Films label.
The film stars Jim Elton in a story inspired by a personal, childhood experience. Shot by both Jim and Tom Menary, the film features footage from the 1966 Batman television series watched on a projector screen by Jim's character. When the image of a burning furnace appears on-screen, the character reaches his hand towards it, recounting a childhood trauma of touching a fire after seeing a similar image on television. The story is interspersed with black-and-white shots of Jim's eyes as he watches the scenes unfold.
Fires of Childhood was produced for Jim's Contemporary Film Practice course at Plymouth University, and was first released under the Wingless Films label on 9th February, 2011, and as the final entry in the Eternal Silence filmography on 10th February. The film features an original score track composed by Tom Menary, which subtly quotes Danny Elfman's 1989 Batman Theme. The track appears on the album Wingless Shorts along with a demo track titled "Switch on and Relax".
